The Outreach Specialist will lead and perform a range of duties relating to the center’s education and outreach programming: manage/oversee/lead the programming and connections to MSU stakeholders and external stakeholders in industry, law enforcement, government, and other stakeholders in other organizations.
This position is an annual year fixed term appointment with a potential for reappointment based on performance and funding.
Specialist will lead, develop, and grow A-CAPP Center education and outreach programming, including but not limited to, the Brand Protection Professional Certificate, executive education, the annual Brand Protection Strategy Summit, online events including World IP Day and A Brand’s New World and the student internship/externship program, with other center team members with the goal of translating the center’s research and knowledge into practical application for brand protection professionals for revenue generation.
Specialist will contribute and assist to other A-CAPP Center outreach efforts, such as the Brand Protection Professional online magazine and Brand Protection Stories Podcast, helping to manage production and external contributors.
Specialist will play a significant role in peer group organizations and professional societies, such as the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition, the International Trademark Association, and others in the anti-counterfeiting and brand protection field that further the outreach mission of the center.
Specialist will take a lead in engaging with brand protection professionals, including industry, law enforcement, government, associations, and other stakeholders both in the U.S. and globally with the director of the center and A-CAPP Center team.
Curriculum Development 35%
Specialist will manage and grow the center’s non-credit educational offerings and experiential learning offerings, such as the student internship curriculum and mentoring projects and scholarships, as they fit into the Center’s strategic priorities to keep them relevant and timely for the current and future workforce of brand protection. Additionally, Specialist will continue to evaluate all educational offerings (both for MSU students and external audiences) for planning and development efforts.
Specialist will conduct research as a part of the A-CAPP Center research initiative to help build up the research portfolio of the Center on current and timely issues related to brand protection to publish both white papers and in journals relevant to their degree/field.

Master’s degree or other advanced degree
1-3 years’ experience (combined-actual or experiential education) in curriculum development, coordinating events and projects, and/or project management, and working with stakeholders in their field
Ability to travel to help attend or run programming abroad
Terminal Degree in related field to brand protection (J.D., Ph.D., or other)
Experience in trademarks and intellectual property issues, research, project/program coordination and management, working with university level students, and extensive networking abilities
Self-starter, creative, entrepreneurial spirit; able to work successfully in a fast-paced environment, meeting deadlines and working well in a team
Comfortable networking and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders from various background including academic and industry in the U.S. and abroad
Comfortable representing the Center and speaking to the media or other organizations publicly about the Center’s activities

The Center for Anti-Counterfeiting and Product Protection (A-CAPP) identifies and examines the complex issue of trademark counterfeiting from a practical, actionable, academic nexus/viewpoint, working collaboratively with brand protection practitioners and communities worldwide. We focus on examining the characteristics and scale of the international trade in counterfeit goods, coupled with the identification and evaluation of efforts by brand owners, government agencies and other organizations to prevent the trade in counterfeit goods and rely on a number of key partnerships with brands, academia, law enforcement/government agencies, our diverse industry advisory board, law firms, third-party providers, and other stakeholders in the field of brand and product protection.
In the past few years, we have expanded from a primarily U.S.-based focus to a global focus in the areas of research, education and outreach. Additionally, our Center has become a nationally renowned academic research center on issues pertaining to counterfeiting, submitting amicus briefs, testifying before Congress, speaking frequently worldwide at conferences, and engaging with over 500 organizations, including over 200 intellectual property rights holder companies.
Additionally, we work with six different colleges at Michigan State University relying collectively on the strength of MSU’s academic disciplines, including but not limited to: the College of Social Science, the College of Communications, Arts, and Sciences; the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the Broad College of Business, the College of Engineering, and the College of Law.
