Global Intellectual Property Paralegal: Become the Newest Member of the Vans Family

Vans, a division of VF Outdoor, LLC, is seeking a mid-level global intellectual property paralegal to join its Legal Department. Vans is a leading action sports footwear company that has an extensive history of manufacturing excellence. How You Will Make a Difference:

  • You will lead global trademark clearance and prosecution efforts.
  • This opportunity will conduct and coordinate preliminary global trademark name and design searches, review, summarize and report search results to the business.
  • Propose and build filing strategies based on business strategy, new products, events, marketing/advertising stories, brand enforcement, etc.
  • As the IP Paralegal you will prepare filing instructions for new global applications and work with outside counsel to clear and coordinate new trademark and copyright applications; work with business partners to obtain product samples and other evidence needed to support the applications; implement once approved.
  • Prepare and assist with filing responses to Office Actions, Statements of Use, Extensions of Time, Section 8 & 15 Affidavits, and oppositions filed against a pending application and any other responsibilities related to prosecution. Coordinate and communicate trademark renewal instructions once renewal instructions are determined by Legal and the business.
  • Collaborate and partner with the Global Brand Enforcement Paralegal responsible for oppositions and cancellations on checking on related parties, marks and case information in general.Work together on removing new road blocks identified prior to filing an application.
  • You will lead efforts in creating, organizing and maintaining the IP Evidence Library.
  • Review all product marketing, advertising and product to ensure it meets Vans branding guidelines and flag potential issues.
  • Assist with the development of reports and presentations with regards to processes, policies, portfolios, clearance and prosecution efforts. Work closely with cross functional teams that includes legal, product, marketing, and creative to effectively grow and maintain the IP portfolio as required by the business and enforcement efforts.
  • Track all clearance, prosecution and marketing/ad review matters and associated communications.
  • This opportunity will assist with other matters as needed, including special projects related to updating policies, processes, audits, and/or other matters related to intellectual property.

Skills for Success:

Years of Related Professional Experience: 7+ years

Educational/ Position Requirements:

  • At least seven plus years of experience in global trademark clearance and prosecution in a law firm or law department; a mix of corporate and law firm experience preferred.
  • College degree and paralegal degree/certificate required
  • Comprehensive knowledge of intellectual property and brand protection
  • Solid interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Must be able to manage client’s expectations in a demanding environment
  • Must be independent and self-motivated and driven to deliver results
  • Knowledge of Diams iQ or similar file management portal
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and challenging environment
  • Desire to learn and develop new skills
  • Ability to anticipate needs and respond to changing demands
  • Capacity to develop and maintain effective, professional relationships amongst internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills

Special Physical and/or Mental Requirements:

  • Travel by air and overnight, as required 10% amount of time.
  • Lifting and/or bending 20 lbs of weight.
