IACC Plays Prominent Role at the 2018 China International Expo in Shanghai

IACC President Addresses Chinese Government and Businesses

IACC President Bob Barchiesi accompanied by Vice President Candice Uzoigwe, and Program Manager Vanessa Bao participated in the 2018 China International Import Expo in Shanghai on November 8th. China President Xi Jinping kicked off the week-long trade fair which attracted more than 3,000 companies from around the world. Bob joined a distinguished group of speakers from the People’s Republic of China, The European Union, U.S. Government, and some of the world’s most famous brands in the Forum on the Fight against IPR Infringement and Counterfeiting.

This invitation-only forum gathered more than 250 IP professionals and was hosted by senior leadership from the Office of the National Leading Group on the Fight against IPR Infringement and Counterfeiting (NLGO), the China State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) and the China Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment (CAEFI). Opening remarks were provided by the Director of the NLGO, the Chairman of CAEFI, the SAMR’s Director General of the Bureau of Law Enforcement and Inspection, among other high-level speakers.

Highlights from Bob Barchiesi’s presentation include comments on the IACC’s experience in international cooperation and the successes it has experienced as a result of collaboration with committed partners such as Alibaba. Bob also commended the work of the Quality Brands Protection Committee (QBPC) in its IP protection work across China and its continued collaboration with the IACC through the years. While at the event, Bob participated in an interview with the Global Times, in which he discussed China’s increased commitment to IP protection over the last 10 years.

The previous day, on November 7th, the IACC and the China Council on Brand Development (CCBD) hosted a Brand Protection Summit in Beijing attended by more than 30 senior government officials and industry representatives from local provinces and enterprises. The Summit served as a prelude to the IACC’s China Delegation visit, which will take place in the first quarter of 2019. It will provide a larger forum where rights-holders and senior Chinese government officials can share best practices in IP protection. In addition, the delegation will meet with senior officials from the Hainan IP Office and discuss how the IACC can proactively assist in the development of a counterfeit free-Free Trade Zone in Hainan. IACC members who are interested in the delegation visit should contact Candice Uzoigwe (cli@iacc.org).

The IACC continues to expand our footprint in China, and our engagement with senior Chinese government officials and relevant organizations. Since Bob became president of the IACC, he continues to encourage dialogue and cooperation between rights-holders, Chinese Officials, Chinese platforms and stakeholders across the region.
