IACC Hosts Largest Spring Conference for its 40th Anniversary Celebration

May 15-17, 2019
Boston Massachusetts

The IACC 2019 Annual Spring Conference took place in mid-May in Boston, MA, where more than 500 attendees from 50 countries gathered at the largest Spring Conference in the organization’s history. The theme of this year's conference was "Welcome to the Revolution: Fighting Fakes in the 21st Century," which connected Boston's rich history of spearheading groundbreaking events and visionary ideas with the IACC's legacy of innovative strategies to fighting fakes.

The conference focused on collaboration and highlighted how forming unlikely partnerships had produced results for the IACC and the greater anti-counterfeiting community.

“We push boundaries. We take bold action and go down untraveled paths. We partner with intermediaries like the Alibaba Group and Amazon to help solve online counterfeiting on their platforms. While others expressed skepticism and doubt with this strategy, we never wavered, we saw the opportunity and the potential for change,” declared IACC President Bob Barchiesi during his opening remarks. “History shows we were right. And now, not only are we seeing results and success from this collaborative approach, we’re also seeing that it has become the new industry norm.”

This year’s Spring Conference was particularly momentous, as the IACC celebrated its 40th anniversary amongst members old and new. Throughout the conference, the organization nodded to its trailblazing work in anti-counterfeiting and its future plans to protect businesses and consumers from counterfeiting. It also played an anniversary video featuring members and partners who shared their experiences working with the IACC.

In the end, attendees left the conference with a bank of best practices, an expanded network, and reaffirmation that opportunities for collaboration are abundant.

Here are some other key events that took place at the Spring Conference:

IP Advisory Group
The IACC announced that together with the US National IPR Coordination Center, it will create an IP Advisory Board. The Advisory Board will serve as a platform between the IPR Center and IP stakeholders to develop innovative operational and strategic projects in anti-counterfeiting and anti-piracy.

Through the Advisory Board and other outreach efforts to IP experts, the group will be hosting calls and meetings with partners to find additional synergies to make their anti-counterfeiting efforts even more impactful.

Keynote Speakers
Derek Benner, Acting Deputy Director, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), gave the keynote address during the Opening Ceremony. Mr. Benner credited the IACC for their innovation in introducing the concept for the newly formed IP Advisory Group. "This collaboration and support enhances our investigative efforts, enabling us to build stronger, more complex cases that focus on the criminal organizations behind these crimes," said Mr. Benner in his remarks.

Vishal Amin, Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator (IPEC) at the White House, also gave a keynote speech at the Opening Ceremony. Mr. Amin highlighted the Trump Administration’s achievements in IP protection and emphasized the importance of global partnerships.

Steve Francis, Assistant Director, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Director, National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, gave the keynote address on the final day of the conference. Mr. Francis spoke about how reducing consumer demand for counterfeits is just as important as shutting down the supply of counterfeits. He noted that raising awareness among consumers about the negative impact of counterfeits is necessary if we were to win the war against fakes.

Special Recognition
The IACC presented plaques recognizing a few of the organization's long-standing partners in the fight against fakes. Derek Benner of ICE was acknowledged for his ability to work effectively with industry to advance anti-counterfeiting. Vishal Amin of IPEC was recognized for the office's long-standing relationship with the IACC. Martin Elliot and Elizabeth Scofield of Visa were distinguished for their incredible impact in fighting fakes working with the IACC through the RogueBlock Program.

Roundtable Discussions with Intermediaries
The Spring Conference kicked off with a series of workshops and roundtable discussions. The workshops focused on building and integrating brand protection throughout a company and how to maximize use and sharing off data. The roundtable discussions allowed participants to take part in intimate discussions with intermediaries and learn about their work in strengthening IP protection on their various platforms. Intermediaries that hosted a roundtable include, Alibaba and Lazada, Amazon, DHgate, eBay, Facebook, Mastercard, Mercado Libre, Visa, Walmart, and Western Union.

Programming
Attendees accessed a high-level agenda, which covered topics such as "Evolution of Brand Protection: Where It Has Been, Where It Is Going, Were It Needs to Go", "Brand Protection as a Total Business Solution", "Online Intelligence to Actionable Offline Enforcement", and "Emerging Abuse Trends Online". Attendees also participated in several practical workshops, including "Success by Design" and "Data Analytics: Metrics, Modelling, and Sharing."

To close the event, there was a "Trending Worldwide" panel, in which the US Patent and Trademark Office's IP attachés provided an update on significant developments around the world, including new legislation and regulations, evolving tactics and trends, and tips to navigate various international IP regimes.

Networking Receptions
The IACC Spring Conference held its Welcome Reception, sponsored by De La Rue, on the first day where attendees were able to network, unwind, and meet their IP peers in the elegant Grand Ballroom. It held a second reception, sponsored by Amazon, the following evening, allowing for additional opportunities for attendees to meet with one another.

Throughout the three-day event, attendees took networking breaks and visited the exhibition hall between panels, workshops, and roundtable sessions. Guests were able to conduct business, form new connections and chat amongst each other.

Supporting the Next Generation of Enforcement Officers
A silent auction that benefited the Homeland Security Philanthropy Council's Homeland Security Cadet Program took place at the Spring Conference.
