The A-CAPP Center is looking for a senior level assistant director of industry outreach, with significant experience in brand protection, anti-counterfeiting or related work in our industry to lead our corporate outreach efforts.

In coordination with the center director, assistant director for education and outreach, and the associate director of research, perform a lead role in the outreach of the center specifically to current and potential industry, government, and other organizational partners on the center’s programming to generate revenue and measurably increase the A-CAPP Center’s impact in the brand protection community. Also, serve as a manager and leader for A-CAPP industry outreach assets, including as editor in chief of the Brand Protection Professional, our industry facing online magazine.  

OUTREACH

External Outreach & Revenue Generation

In coordination with the center leadership, perform a lead role in the center’s revenue generation through recruitment and management of current and future partners in support of its outreach, education, and research programs, including the industry advisory board, and the four brand protection councils, all of which are comprised of members from the field of brand protection. Manage the communication loop between A-CAPP research, industry feedback, and idea generation.

Coordinates, contributes, and shares new and developing contacts with other members of the center and actively engages the center’s client relations management tracking.  

Presents as an industry expert in lectures, workshops, and training for off-campus industry groups at conferences or other events (internal and external events); attends industry conferences and events for the purpose of networking and engaging with off-campus current and future industry and government partners; Helps to translate A-CAPP research into outreach and education assets.  Regular engagement with media and press. Contribute to A-CAPP’s marketing strategy.

Internal Outreach at MSU 

Works with the university community, including center faculty, staff, students, and others in the development of outreach and education programs.

Management of Outreach Assets/Programs

Manage specific outreach assets or programs, such as, but not limited to the Brand Protection Professional and the Brand Protection Stories podcast, including editor in chief of the BPP, content creation and solicitation, management of meetings and appropriate industry engagement, involvement, and funding, in conjunction with the director, assistant director of education/outreach, and associate director of research. 25%

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

Non-credit Education

Assist and serve as a subject matter expert to center faculty and staff in curriculum development for its non-credit bearing educational program, including new curriculum development and updates to current curriculum. 10%

Position would be based in East Lansing, Michigan, or in an urban area where A-CAPP stakeholders are located, including Los Angeles metropolitan area, greater New York City metropolitan area, or Washington D.C. metropolitan area.

Minimum Requirements

Master’s Degree and at least 8 years of experience in the field of brand protection or closely related field, or in lieu of an advanced degree, 15 years’ experience in the field of brand protection or anti-counterfeiting, or closely related field (such as intellectual property law, online security, etc.)

  • Experience presenting at brand protection industry conferences
  • Experience in collaboration within the brand protection industry across multiple stakeholder groups, including intellectual property rights owners, government, law enforcement, vendors, platforms, and academia
  • Experience in contributing to within the field of brand protection or anti-counterfeiting or closely related field
  • Experience effectively networking in the field of brand protection in order to fulfil certain objectives, projects, or initiatives
  • Experience in developing funding streams for initiatives, whether internal to an organization, through grant funding, fundraising, or other types of revenue generation

  • Succinct professional writing
  • Comfortable with public speaking, running meetings, and communicating complex ideas to audiences
  • Use basic software for editing and social media, such as Canva or LinkedIn
  • Ability to network and engage with those from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to manage projects successfully meeting deadlines and staying in budget
  • Experience fundraising or other budget management; ability to work in hybrid work environment.

Department Statement

The Center for Anti-Counterfeiting and Product Protection (A-CAPP) identifies and examines the complex issue of trademark counterfeiting from a practical, actionable, academic nexus/viewpoint, working collaboratively with brand protection practitioners and communities worldwide. We focus on examining the characteristics and scale of the international trade in counterfeit goods, coupled with the identification and evaluation of efforts by brand owners, government agencies and other organizations to prevent the trade in counterfeit goods and rely on a number of key partnerships with brands, academia, law enforcement/government agencies, our diverse industry advisory board, law firms, third-party providers, and other stakeholders in the field of brand and product protection.

In the past few years, we have expanded from a primarily U.S.-based focus to a global focus in the areas of research, education and outreach.  Additionally, our Center has become a nationally renowned academic research center on issues pertaining to counterfeiting, submitting amicus briefs, testifying before Congress, speaking frequently worldwide at conferences, and engaging with over 500 organizations, including over 200 intellectual property rights holder companies. 

Additionally, we work with six different colleges at Michigan State University relying collectively on the strength of MSU’s academic disciplines, including but not limited to: the College of Social Science, the College of Communications, Arts, and Sciences; the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the Broad College of Business, the College of Engineering, and the College of Law.
